About UM Community Ministries

UMCM

United Methodist Community Ministries is a mission education and resource ministry, which provides a variety of resources so that every congregation can become actively involved in life-changing, risk-taking service for the transformation of the world.

Our Mission is to:

Encourage-Assist existing District Mission Centers, support churches with community outreach ministries, and provide aid to churches or  assistance with outreach ministries.

Enable- Help churches and groups identify community needs and assets, develop a mission and strategic plan, form partnerships and implement community ministries.

Educate- Provide valuable tools that help churches and clusters learn how to become more involved in community ministries through website information, training, retreats, mission tours, grant-writing workshops and more.

Bishop Ough's Vision

Bishop Bruch OughBishop Ough’s vision is that every congregation, whether large or small, would have 60-80% of its active members directly involved in radical hospitality and risk-taking service in their community. Every congregation is called to reach out to 3-4 times the number of people who attend worship on Sunday morning and to give generously to mission.

Is your congregation bearing fruit? Our staff, workshops, and resources can help all congregations work toward the Bishop's vision.

Did you know that 80 cents of every dollar given to United Methodist Community Ministries goes directly to community outreach ministries and partnerships? Almost all of our administrative costs come out of our investment portfolio. When you give through apportionments and second mile giving, your financial giving is enabling many different ministries to take place in communities across nine counties in central Ohio. Now that’s something to celebrate!

Our History

Our organization began 100 years ago in 1908 as the Columbus Church Extension and Missionary Society. After 1931 it was called the Methodist Union of the Columbus District. Its purpose was to establish new churches, supply teachers and preachers and to carry out ministries “to persons affected adversely by rapid social and economic change.” In 1990 the name of the organization was changed to the United Methodist Mission Society of the Columbus Churches. They had a Director of Urban Ministries and an Administrative Officer, which were then combined into one position in 2000. In July 2006 the name changed to United Methodist Community Ministries as a way to start fresh in two enlarged districts including nine counties and 230 churches. We seek to be rural and urban, open, welcoming, diverse and inclusive.
